Chapter Nine

Dale cupped her hand over Taren’s knee, gently massaging her thumb against her jeans.

“Taren,” she said softly. She hated to disturb the peaceful look on her face. “Taren, you need to wake up.” When she didn’t move Dale gave her leg a nudge. “Taren, time to wake up.” She pulled the jacket from Taren’s grip. “We’re here.”

“Where?” she mumbled, her eyes still closed. “What time is it?” She snuggled against the window.

“Come on, Sleeping Beauty. We’re here. Wake up and smell the parking lot.”

“Parking lot?” Taren’s eyes snapped open. “Where are we?” She straightened herself in the seat, blinking her way to reality.

“According to your GPS and the sign on the building this is the Concord Place Retirement and Assisted Living Facility.” Dale looked up at the aging glass-paneled building. “It looks like a hotel right out of the fifties.”

“What time is it?” She snatched up her cell phone to check the time. “It’s almost eight o’clock. Why didn’t you wake me up?” she demanded, rubbing her eyes and running her fingers through her hair.

“I did. I pulled into the parking lot and said wake up.”

“Why did you let me sleep all this way?” She turned to Dale with a plaintive look. “You did all that driving and all I did was sleep. You should have awakened me hours ago.”

“So your nap is my fault?” Dale teased. She climbed out of the truck to stretch her legs.

“Yes. And you should be ashamed,” Taren said as she tapped in a number on her cell phone. The conversation was short, leaving her frustrated. “Mr. Holburn isn’t here yet.”

“Does someone have a key to let us in your aunt’s apartment?”

“You’d think so but no. We’ve got an hour or so to kill. Do you want to sit in the lobby or…” she said, raising her eyebrows suggestively.

“Breakfast?”

“You read my mind. I could use something to eat and a ladies’ room with a mirror.” Taren rebuckled her seat belt and tossed a grin at Dale. “And I know just the place. You’ll love it. Great food, even by Chicago standards, and it’s only five minutes away.”

“I’m all for that. My butt is growing roots in this seat.”

“I really feel bad about you doing all the driving while I just slept,” Taren said apologetically. She rested her hand on Dale’s arm as if pleading for absolution.

“But it’s my fault since I didn’t wake you up?”

“Yes,” she said and nodded, turning her smile out the front window. “Turn right out of the parking lot.”

Dale waited for an opening before zipping into the line of cars. “I had forgotten how congested big city traffic can be.”

“The funny thing is, this isn’t really all that bad. Rush hour through the week is twice this heavy. And downtown by the lakefront? I think the water attracts idiot drivers.”

“That bad?” Dale’s fantasy wench came skipping across her thoughts at the mention of water.

“Oh, yes. I hate to drive on Michigan Avenue or Lake Shore Drive. I don’t miss it in Joplin.
